He’s the most honest person I know. When he’s happy about something he often takes his shirt off and runs around the house like a wild banshee. When something upsets him, he stops in his tracks and cries his eyes out regardless of how many people are watching. When he prays he thanks God for the ducks he gets to feed and the friends that go to spend time with him. He is the most honest man I know and his name is Dan. He is two-years-old.
As I sat next to Dan at his parent’s house this week he looked up at me and said: “Alex, I don’t like pink.” It was brilliant. I told him it was good that he did not like pink. He didn’t need my affirmation, but he smiled anyway.
Though I am 23 years older than Dan the main man, there are things I still need to learn from him or my faith will not grow. We sometimes think Jesus was just messing about when he said to come to him like a child, or to pray short prayers in faith or to trust that God has good things in store for all of us who trust in him. What is it about my mind that doubts that God has good things in store for me. It doesn’t take much faith to naval gaze, state how many faults, flaws and mistakes I have logged up and settle for what I have got in the here and now. However, it does take faith to accept the gift of forgiveness on offer and walk forward into the great plans that God has for us. Faith despite faults, fear and folly. “No Lord, I do not deserve any good things from you because I am the most selfish man I know.” “Yes Alex, but I am changing you from the inside with my Spirit and my Word, and I love you as you are. So get your eyes out of your naval and take what’s on the table.”
I sat at my window and spoke to the Lord like Dan speaks to me. How amazing it is to be able to be honest with your creator. Jesus really did mean what he said.
“Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
- Luke 11:11-13
Peace.
